Your dentist evaluates your restorations at every dental checkup, which is one of the reasons it’s essential to visit the dentist every six months.

Of course, your dentist uses specific criteria to determine whether a restoration is salvageable or should be changed to protect your tooth and oral structure.

Signs they need to be changed include:

  • Noticeable or significant wear and tear
  • Cracks or breaks
  • Damage that can’t be repaired

If a restoration is merely loose but still intact, your Raleigh, NC, dentist can potentially re-cement it over your tooth.

What Are Restorations and How Are They Used?

Restorations can mean anything from tooth crowns to veneers and fillings. At our dental office, we offer CEREC same-day crowns, so if you need a replacement, you won't have to wait weeks!

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a treated tooth. A veneer is a cosmetic shell of porcelain affixed to the forward-facing tooth.

When restorations are damaged, it’s essential to contact your dentist as soon as possible for a repair or replacement. Otherwise, you risk bacteria penetrating the restored tooth, leading to decay or infection. A tooth infection is a painful dental emergency.

Tips to Increase Restoration Longevity

To increase restoration longevity (or avoid restoration damage), do the following:

  • Brush and floss regularly.
  • Visit your dentist every six months.
  • Never bite directly into sticky candy with a restored tooth.
  • Wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth.
  • Wear a mouthguard if you’re on a sports team.
